His mother’s death is the deepest scar seared on his heart, the blazing fire burns down young PAN’s innocence, but kindles his fearless morale to fight. The consuming flames turn into Azalea blossoms, reflecting the shining Red Star, which lights up the way in front of him.

ACT I

Review

On the way of marching, PAN Dongzi comes back to his home town with the Red Army. There, he sees the Azalea blossoming all over once again. The redness turns back time to his youth, when the sunshine was bright and warm, his parents kept his accompany, living a busy yet peaceful life.

Remember

Clouds gathering in the sky, the army marches in the storming weather. The rapid pace reminds PAN of the Red Army’s retreat from the Soviet area. The night before the retreat, PAN’s father left him a red star. Though PAN was reluctant to let him go, his father went away with the army. Local oppressor HU Hansan, and his fellow outlaws came back, terrorizing the local area… PAN Dongzi, under his mother’s embrace, witnessed every evil deed. He held onto the red star, his fighting morale grew stronger.

Fire

PAN Dongzi and his comrades proceed in the darkness, looking out for each other, rushing forward.

Darkness, fear, bloodshed, sacrifice, nothing diminishes the Communists’ faith. PAN’s mother used to call for underground rallies, spreading the creeds of Communism, with the Party flag sprung in the background. PAN witnessed the underground rally being exposed, his mother died in the retreat, protecting the fleeing crowd. She defensed the Communists’ ever-burning will with her own life.

In the tearing fire, consumed with grief, silently PAN wept until he had no strength left to weep…

ACT II

Oath

PAN lied on the ground, exhausted from the overwhelming sadness. While mourning for his mother, he held on to the cherishing memories of the times he spent with her. The blossoming Azalea echoes his mother’s warm embrace and tender whisper. Amongst the flowers, the Bright Red Star shone above the troop, calling for PAN to preserver, watching over his enrollment in the army.

Once again, PAN stood in front of the Party flag, and took the solemn oath, just as his mother, dedicating himself to the Party’s cause.

Progress

The refraction of sunlight sparkles across the river; bamboo rafts float away. PAN Dongzi used to sit on the raft, holding the Red Star his father left him, and longed for the day he became an army man.

Years gone by, PAN matures like the steal forged in the furnace of Revolution. The Red Army establish good name wherever they go, be it rivers or forests. PAN is fully equipped for battles!

Fight

The battle begins, PAN Dongzi carries his riffle, and joins the army in the life-and-death combat.

The tyranny of HU Hansan and the White Guards has become outrageous, villagers are dying in destitution. Women and children suffer the most, living in constant fears, crying out for help. Just as the fiercely blazing fire is about to consume the people, PAN charges headlong at the enemy. PAN fights fearlessly, saving more kids from the same loss of their mothers.

In the end, the Red Army annihilates HU and the rest of his gang. PAN’s mother watches his brave deeds from a distance, and smiles with gratification.

EPILOGUE

Peace is restored after the war. PAN falls asleep on the ground, and dreams of his mother. She comes down and strokes his hair, singing lullabies. Azalea blossoms all over again.

PAN wakes up, but his mother disappears into the flowers. All has left with him is his comrade-in-arms. Red Star shines above him, representing his flaring faith.

A matured PAN is carrying a bigger responsibility. He must carry on the battle as a Red Army soldier.

March! Following the cause of Communist Party! Liberating people across the nation! March on!
