Entering the Shanghai Dance School in 2000, ZHANG became a dancer of Shanghai Ballet after his graduation in 2007.

Repertoire credits include: principal roles in The White-haired Girl, Swan Lake (Grand Version, Derek Deane), Bright Red Star (ZHAO Ming), A Sigh of Love (Bertrand d’At), Coppelia (Pierre Lacotte), Giselle, The Butterfly Lovers (XIN Lili),The Sleeping Beauty (Shanghai Ballet Version, Derek Deane), The Nutcracker (Shanghai Grand Theatre Version, Derek Deane), Le Fantôme de L'opéra(Derek Deane), etc; important roles in Jane Eyre (Patrick de Bana), Hamlet (Derek Deane), The Last Mission of Marco Polo (José Martinez), Romeo and Juliet (Derek Deane), Echoes of Eternity (Patrick de Bana) , The Lady of the Camellias (Derek Deane), The Burning Youth (LIU Ligong); important solos and leads in La Sylphide (Jean-Paul Gravier); performed in La Valse (George Balanchine) and contemporary pieces The Rite of Spring, Vanish, The Tales of Hoffmann, Keep the Length, W.H.Y, La Danse du Stravinsky, Grand Pas du Bach, Bolero, etc.
