| 1930s-1940s, Shi
Ku Men, Shanghai. In a hot summer, Mrs. Wang, a company secretary,
moves to live in a Shi Ku Men with her husband. At the same time,
a newspaper columnist Mr. Li and his wife move to the same Shi Ku
Men. Mr. Wang and Mrs. Li seem to have a secret love. Once when the
two couples are playing Ma Jiang together, Mr. Wang goes away and
so does Mrs. Li. At that moment, Mrs. Wang and Mr. Li can feel each
other’s loneliness. At the ball, Mrs. Wang and Mr. Li by chance
find their spouses are actually together. Mr. Li sends Mrs. Wang home.
On the way back, they both had implicit feelings. The war is approaching
and people flee away. Mr. Wang and Mrs. Li leave their families and
elope together. Mr. Li keeps writing his fiction novels. With strong
emotions, he puts his inexpressible love in the real world on the
fiction character. Meanwhile, Mrs. Wang is almost heartbroken. She
looks for Mr. Li and finds him in the hotel where he is writing his
books. It is time when they can tell each other their inside deep
love while the sound of bombing comes over. The war starts and they
have to separate. At the end of the war, Mr. Li comes back to the
Shi Ku Men to look for Mrs. Wang. Mrs. Wang has a son now. Mr. Li
watches them disappearing in the crowd, leaving himself with a sigh
of love. The song “The Blossom Youth” is still soaring
in the sky like thin fog. The best human love experience may just
be as short as ‘blossom youth’, or only a wishful thinking
depending on chances. |
